The 2nd Annual HBCU Rugby Classic & Music Festival has come and gone, and has changed the culture a little more. The matching high school 7s teams in, Memphis Inner City Rugby, Baton Rouge Area Youth Rugby, and New Orleans Barbarians, gave us a glimpse at what the future is looking like. Spectators were able to enjoy and see what the talent and programs are looking like.
The 2019 HBCU Rugby Classic Championship was won by Morehouse College. They took the game, in a dominating fashion, winning 31-14 over Prairie View A&M. This was a complete turn around from last years, 41-3 win by Prairie View A&M. Caleb Ross, of Prairie View A&M, won the 2019 HBCU Rugby Classic Player of the Match Award
In the HBCU Rugby Classic High School 7s, Memphis Inner City Rugby went undefeated in both their men’s and women’s matches. MICR boys won their games, 22-0 over Baton Rouge Area Youth Rugby, 31-7 and 29-0, over New Orleans Barbarians. The MICR girls defeated New Orleans Barbarians, 37-0 and 19-0. MICR did get solid push back by both the New Orleans Barbarians, and the Baton Rouge Area Youth Rugby. Kamyia of Memphis Inner City Rugby was the Player of the Match for HBCU Rugby Classic High School 7s. Nayla of New Orleans Barbarians was voted as Player of the Match for the team.
